Course overview:
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the learner with the skills, competence, knowledge and understanding to become an accounting technician.
A perfect progression if you’ve already completed Levels 3 and 4, or you’re at a more advanced stage in your career and want a qualification to give you the confidence and proof that you have the skills to do the job.
Once you’ve achieved this level, you’ll be the proud owner of the AT SA Accounting Qualification. With evidence of one year’s past relevant work experience – attained while you were training maybe – you’ll be able to apply to become a Platinum member of AT SA and use the letters MAT SA after your name.

The duration is variable, depending on the learners’ progress and previous experience, but it is likely to take between 18 and 24 months.
Successful completion of AT SA FET Certificate: Accounting Technician or equivalent studies in Accounting to assessed by AT SA.
A learner with similar qualification and/or experience can apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL). In this case, proof of qualifications and work experience will be required.
The level 5 qualification is the third level of the AT SA Accounting Qualification and covers higher level accounting tasks, including drafting financial statements, managing budgets, and evaluating financial performance. You’ll also have the opportunity to specialise in areas from tax to auditing and credit control. The advanced level Certificate: Accounting Qualification consists of six modules.
Course Structure
- Budgeting
Budgeting teaches the student the principles of budgeting and drafting of budgets.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of internal and external business factors on budgets
- Understand why budgets are used
- Understand the skills needed in budget preparation
- Business Tax
Business Tax will discuss the preparation of tax returns for sole traders, partnerships and incorporated businesses and the recognition of trading profits, making adjustments and the application of current relevant legislation.
- Completing corporation tax returns and supporting computations for incorporated businesses
- Understanding impact of legislation and legislative changes
- Understanding tax law and its implications for incorporated / unincorporated businesses
- Personal Tax
- Calculating income from all sources and identifying taxable and non-taxable items
- Applying current legislation to calculate tax payable on income
- Accounting for capital gains tax according to current legislation
- Financial Performance
Financial Performance teaches the student the principles of managing financial performance and measuring financial performance.
- Demonstrate an accurate understanding of the internal and external factors that affect organisations
- Be aware of the cost accounting techniques needed in monitoring financial performance
- Understand the techniques necessary for measuring performance and managing costs
- Financial Statements
Financial Statements teaches the student to understand the principles of drafting financial statements and how to draft financial statements.
- Internal Control and Accounting Systems
Internal Control and Accounting Systems teaches the student the principles of internal control and how to evaluate accounting systems.
Upon completion of the qualification, learners will be awarded a Certificate: Accounting NQF Level 5 from SAICA/AT(SA).
After completing this course and gaining one year of relevant work experience at a supervisory level, learners will be able to apply for Platinum Membership with AT(SA).
