FET Certificate: Accounting Technician
Course overview:
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the learner with the skills, competence, knowledge and understanding to become an accounting technician.
This enables learners to develop work relevant competence, as an aid to employment and career progression. The qualification also allows learners access to lifelong professional development and support, through the opportunity to take up full membership of the AAT, the largest professional body for accounting technicians.
The intermediate level FET Certificate: Accounting Technician Qualification consists of seven modules. The level 4 qualification is the second level of the AT SA Accounting Qualification. The qualification introduces more complex accounting tasks, such as maintaining cost accounting records and preparing reports and returns.

The duration is variable, depending on the learners’ progress and previous experience, but it is likely to take between twelve and eighteen months.
There are no formal entry requirements in terms of qualifications, but it is assumed that the learners accessing this qualification are competent in language, literacy, communication and mathematical literacy at NQF Level 3
FET Certificate: Accounting Technician is the second level of the AT(SA) Accounting Qualification. It introduces you to more complex accounting, tax and finance tasks, having completed your Level 3.
Course Structure
- Accounts Preparation 1
Accounts Preparation 1 teaches the student the principles of account preparation, extending the trial balance using accounting adjustments and accounting for fixed assets.
- Accounts Preparation 2
Accounts Preparation 2 teaches the student to prepare the accounts for partnerships and final accounts for sole traders.
- Cash Management
Cash Management teaches the student the principles of cash management and actual cash management.
- Cost and Revenues
Costs and Revenues teaches the student the principles of costing and providing cost and revenue information.
- Indirect Tax
Indirect Tax teaches the student the principles of VAT and preparing and completing VAT returns.
- Professional Ethics in Accounting and Finance
Professional Ethics in Accounting and Finance teaches the student to have an understanding of ethics in their work environment, in their behaviour to customers and how to act in the case of suspected breach of ethical codes.
- Spreadsheet Software
Spreadsheet Software teaches the student to use a spreadsheet to work with data, use formulas, analysis tools and techniques to meet requirements and to present, format and publish spreadsheet information.
Upon completion of the qualification, learners will be awarded the FET Certificate: Accounting Technician NQF Level 4 from SAICA/AT(SA)
This qualification leads to the Higher Certificate: Accounting, which is registered at level 5 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). It also leads to membership of AT(SA) at the Gold membership level.
